Winter is the easy recommendation and the expensive one. If you travel later, you are trading a lower rate for more showers, hurricane-season dates and a better chance of seaweed on the sand.

The short answer

Dry and busy in winter; hotter, wetter and cheaper from May onwards.

PeriodWhat to expect
December–AprilDriest, peak prices
May–JuneWarmer, more showers
July–NovemberHot, hurricane season, lower prices

Hurricane season

The Atlantic season runs from 1 June to 30 November. Most days are fine, but buy travel insurance and watch forecasts. I would not skip the insurance to save the price of a cocktail.

Sargassum

Seaweed arrives in varying amounts, mostly in warmer months. Some resorts clear their beaches daily. East-facing beaches can be more affected. Check a recent report for the beach you actually booked, not a photo from January.

Getting to Punta Cana

Punta Cana International Airport (PUJ) is close to the resorts: about 15 to 30 minutes to Bávaro and up to about 45 minutes to Uvero Alto. Every traveller must complete the free E-Ticket before check-in; the tourist card fee is included in the airfare for most air arrivals.
