Choose the area before the hotel. The beach, the airport ride and how easy it is to leave the resort change from one strip to the next, and a pretty room will not fix a 45-minute taxi if you wanted to wander.
Quick comparison
Choose by beach and by how much you’ll leave the resort.
| Area | Best for | Airport | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bávaro | Choice, first-timers | 15–30 min | Busy beach |
| Arena Gorda and Macao | All-inclusive stays | 25–40 min | Little outside the resorts |
| Uvero Alto | Quiet, couples | Up to 45 min | Rougher sea, remote |
| Punta Cana village | Short stays, golf | Minutes | Fewer hotels |
| Cap Cana | Luxury | 10–20 min | Pricey, gated |
Bávaro
This is the heart of the resort coast, including Los Corales and El Cortecito, with restaurants and shops you can walk to. I would start here if you want a choice of hotels and a calm beach. Bávaro hotels.
Arena Gorda and Macao
Large resorts sit on a wide beach. Playa Macao, just north, is a public beach with waves. Fine if you plan to stay inside the gate. Arena Gorda hotels.
Uvero Alto
Resorts sit far from everything, for people who do not plan to leave. Quiet is the point. The sea is often rougher. Uvero Alto hotels.
Cap Cana
A gated development with Juanillo beach, the marina and Scape Park. Upscale, and you pay for the gate as well as the sand. Cap Cana hotels.
